I woke up this morning to a phone call from my mother. She was
screaming into the phone "I am moving to Eastern Montana! Do you
want to come with me?" I wiped the sleep from my eyes and tried
to focus. Why was my mother calling me at 6am to tell me that
she is moving to Montana? I don't even know where Montana is on
a map! Yes, I got a D in geography in high school, not my best
subject.
She quickly started to ramble on about an ad on
Craigslist.com
that claimed to have affordable Eastern Montana land for sale.
The listing that she liked was for a ranch with cattle, a large
barn and 320 acres of land.
Let me back up a little bit for you. My mother is a 64 year
old "city slicker" from Boston. She raised 2 children and worked
in an office her whole life. Why, on God's green earth, would
she want to answer a
Craigslist.com
listing for Eastern Montana land for sale? More importantly, why
would she want cattle and a barn on 320 acres of land? She
complains about the work it takes to keep her 1100 square foot
condo looking good! She doesn't even mow her own lawn!!!
The idea of a 320 acre ranch has me a little bit intrigued.
So, I stumble out of bed, turn on my computer, and log onto the
website that she is so excited about. I quickly type in the
keywords and quite a few listings come up. I never knew you
could buy a whole working farm over the internet! I must be
behind the times! My senior citizen mother even knew how to find
it! I am still not sure WHY she was looking for this, but I was
interested in more details. I start to read the listing for the
property.
Okay, I see the cattle are included. Alright, I see that you
get 320 acres of land. What??? What is this?? The price for the
Eastern Montana land that is for sale is $90,000?? Something
cannot be right. I proceed to tell my mother that nothing with
320 acres of land could possibly be only $90,000.
I paid $85,000 for my parking spot in Boston last year! I am
not convinced. I read more. "Please send a deposit of $20,000 by
Western Union if you are interested. This will begin the
transfer process." Ahhhh, it all makes sense now! I am happy
that my mother called me before sending her money. My dreams of
an inheritance would have gone up in a smoke of SCAM!
